Serie A Preview: AC Milan

It was a busy transfer season for Milan. The Rossoneri added some world class talent to a frontline that looked average. Leonardo is out as manager and Massimiliano Allegri is in. Allegri typically prefers a 4-3-1-2. Here is what the Milan squad looks like:

Goalkeepers: Abbiati, Roma, Amelia

Defenders: Kaladze, Zambrotta, Yepes, Oddo, Jankulovski, Bonera, Thiago Silva, Antonini, Nesta, Onyewu, Boateng

Midfielders: Seedorf, Ambrosini, Abate, Pirlo, Flamini, Gattuso

Strikers: Inzaghi, Ibrahimovic, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Pato,

With the additions up front, it would appear that Milan’s strength is in the likes of Robinho, Ibra, Pato, Dinho, and company up top. Before Ibra and Robinho came in, the frontline was not going to scare the likes of Inter and other big guns across Europe. Now with Robinho and Ibrahimovic, Milan could boast one of the best forward lines in the World. If Allegri does choose to stick with 2 forwards, I think it will be Ibrahimovic and Robinho. Pato will be forced to the bench, but will feature in most matches. Inzaghi also would get pushed to the bench.

In the playmaking role behind the two forwards, it seems to be Ronaldinho as the man to spring Robinho and Ibra to goal. Pirlo can also play in this role, but I can see Milan trying to put as much talent on the field as possible, and keep Pirlo and Dinho on the field at the same time. Behind the playmaker are three midfielders. The captain Ambrosini has a spot. Pirlo as well. The last one will depend on who Milan is playing against and who Allegri feels will give him the best matchup. Seedorf and Gattuso are the likely candidates. Flamini has an outside chance, but his transfer to Milan hasn’t worked as well as many thought it would.

Four defenders along the back line. Zambrotta at right back. Nesta and Thiago Silva at CB. Left back will be Antonini. That’s pretty certain, but Milan have quality backups. Yepes is versatile and can play almost anywhere along the backline. Jankulovski as well, but will most likely be the second choice behind Antonini. Boateng can play RB, but I think he will compete with Seedorf and Gattuso for that midfield spot. Oddo can provide cover for Zambrotta.

Milan have a splendid attack, but the success of the season will depend on how well the back four play over the season. Nesta is on his last legs. Zambrotta isn’t getting any younger. Thiago Silva is young, but could be the most reliable of the back four.

When the Serie A season comes to an end, the Milan fans will be expecting to win the league. They should be expecting to overtake their eternal rivals, Inter (who have won the league for 5 straight seasons). Milan have also gone from Champions League pretenders to now serious contenders.
